Histoire

Ryuuku, Shinigami* lambda a,délibérément, fait tomber sa Death Note (dans le but de jouir de la zizanie provoquée par le futur propriétaire du "Carnet" ou "Journal des morts") dans le monde des Humains.
Sur Terre, un jeune lycéen surdoué de 17 ans, Yagami Raito, découvre un carnet dont le titre est celui de Death Note. En le lisant, Raito pense qu'il s'agit d'une sorte de farce, comme peuvent l'être les messages de mauvais sort. En effet, il est inscrit sur la Death Note, qu'en écrivant le nom d'une personne et en ayant en tête son visage, le propriétaire du carnet peut la tuer; soit en lui provocant une crise cardiaque si rien n'est mentionné, soit en indiquant clairement les conditions de sa mort.
Ryuuku retrouve Raito et lui explique que le Death Note sera le lien entre eux deux et que seul celui qui touche la Death Note peut la voir et l'entendre .Raito se met alors à tester ce livre afin de vérifier la véracité de ce qui y est écrit. Tout d'abord, en regardant une prise d'otages à la télévision, il décide de tuer le criminel sans en préciser la cause. Et effectivement, au bout de 46 secondes le ravisseur s'effondre, mort d'une crise cardiaque.
Deuxièmement, en se promenant dans la rue, il aperçoit une scène gênante : un homme et ses compagnons agressent une jeune femme. Comme il était en moto, Raito décide de le tuer en précisant sur la Death Note une mort "par accident".
Et une nouvelle fois, l'effet se produisit, l'homme fut projeté brutalement par un camion. Raito détestant la soif de pouvoir et la corruption qui règne dans le japon comme partout ailleur sur la Terre il décide de changer le monde, en le nettoyant de toutes ses impuretés... En quelque sorte, il veut maintenir les criminels dans la terreur d'être tués par une sorte de dieu surnommé rapidemement "Kira".
Pendant ce temps, la conférence de l'ICPO se tient et c'est alors qu'apparait l'adversaire de Kira,un détective de génie nommé L....
